The Most Common Insulation Materials

1. Fiberglass

Properties: Fiberglass is one of the most widely used insulation materials. It has excellent thermal resistance and can handle high temperatures, making it suitable for both residential and commercial heating systems. It’s also noncombustible and provides some sound insulation.

Advantages:

  • High heat resistance
  • Good fire performance
  • Available in pre-formed pipe sections
  • Cost-effective and widely available

Disadvantages:

  • Can irritate skin and lungs during installation
  • Requires a vapor barrier in humid areas

Fiberglass pipe insulation is ideal for hot water and steam lines in basements, mechanical rooms, and other dry indoor spaces.

2. Polyethylene (PE) Foam

Properties: Polyethylene foam is a lightweight, flexible, closed-cell material with low thermal conductivity. It’s easy to install and commonly used in residential applications.

Advantages:

  • Easy to cut and fit
  • Affordable and widely available
  • Good insulation value for its thickness
  • Often comes with self-sealing edges

Disadvantages:

  • Limited temperature tolerance (typically up to 180°F / 82°C)
  • Less fire-resistant than fiberglass

PE foam is best suited for domestic hot water pipes and low-temperature heating systems where the pipe surface doesn’t get excessively hot.

3. Rubber (Elastomeric Foam)

Properties: Elastomeric foam, often known by brand names like Armaflex, is a flexible, closed-cell insulation that resists moisture and condensation. It’s used for both heating and cooling applications.

Advantages:

  • Excellent moisture resistance
  • Flexible and easy to install
  • Good thermal performance
  • Available in a range of thicknesses

Disadvantages:

  • More expensive than PE foam
  • Moderate fire resistance

Rubber insulation is ideal for areas where condensation control is important, such as around chilled water lines or in humid basements.

4. Polyurethane (PUR) Foam

Properties: Polyurethane foam offers very low thermal conductivity and can handle higher temperatures than PE foam. It’s often used in pre-insulated pipe systems or industrial applications.

Advantages:

  • Superior insulation performance
  • High temperature tolerance
  • Durable and long-lasting

Disadvantages:

  • Higher cost
  • Less flexible than other foams

PUR foam is a good choice for long pipe runs or outdoor installations where maximum energy efficiency is desired.

5. Cellular Glass

Properties: Cellular glass is a rigid, inorganic insulation made from crushed glass. It’s completely moisture-proof, noncombustible, and resistant to most chemicals.

Advantages:

  • 100% vapor- and moisture-tight
  • Extremely durable
  • Excellent fire resistance
  • Long service life

Disadvantages:

  • Expensive
  • Requires precise installation

Cellular glass is typically used in industrial or commercial settings, but it can also be applied in residential systems where durability and moisture protection are top priorities.

Choosing the Right Insulation Thickness

The required insulation thickness depends on pipe diameter, operating temperature, and location. In general, the greater the temperature difference between the pipe and the surrounding air, the thicker the insulation should be. The U.S. Department of Energy and local building codes provide minimum standards, but going beyond the minimum can yield better energy savings.

Installation and Maintenance

Pipe insulation can often be installed as a DIY project, especially on exposed pipes in basements or utility rooms. Choose pre-slit insulation that matches your pipe diameter, and ensure all seams are sealed tightly. For outdoor or damp environments, use materials with a built-in vapor barrier or wrap the insulation with a weatherproof covering.

Inspect your insulation periodically for damage, moisture, or gaps. Damaged insulation should be replaced promptly to maintain efficiency.
